About Hubert Minnis

Hubert A. Minnis, M.D.  

Hubert Alexander Minnis was born on 16 April 1954, in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, to Rosalie North and Randolph Minnis. His schooling included Our Lady’s Primary School, Western Junior and St. Augustine College, Nassau, and the University of Minnesota.

After obtaining his doctor of medicine degree in 1985 from the University of the West Indies and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gyneacologists (MRCOG) in London, Dr. Minnis returned home and worked as a physician at the Princess Margaret Hospital. There, he served as a consultant and head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as deputy chief of staff.

Minnis was president of the Medical Association of The Bahamas, a member of the Medical Council, an associate lecturer at the University of West Indies in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and chairman of the Hotel Corporation of The Bahamas. He has a special interest and dedication to the promotion of Bahamian ownership in the economy and for the redevelopment of traditional over-the-hill communities.

In addition to working as a doctor, Dr. Minnis is a politician. He was elected to the legislature in May 2007 and appointed to the cabinet as minister of health. Minnis also served as Prime Minister of The Bahamas from 11 May 2017 to 16 September 2021. Minnis is the leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), the former governing party, and a member of Parliament for the New Providence constituency of Killarney. He has held the additional portfolio of minister of finance since November 2020.

Dr. Hubert Minnis is married to Sybilene Patricia (née Beneby) Minnis, and is the father of three children. His son Jamil Minnis is also a medical doctor.
